National Trust, Cornwall: Where Have I Been Exploring?
It’s not difficult to see that Cornwall is home to the most outstanding beauty spots in the country. The turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, sub tropical gardens and historical/scientific areas of interest are just some of the reasons why the county is home to over 50+ National Trust spots.
National Trust is a charity which cares and protects a number of special places across the UK including coastline, forests, woods, fens, beaches, farmland, moorland, islands, archaeological remains and many other areas. The National Trust relies on income from membership fees, donations and legacies, and revenue raised from commercial operations.
A few weeks ago I visited Glendurgan Gardens which is a National Trust sub-tropical garden in Falmouth. The woman behind the counter went through the benefits of purchasing a National Trust (junior) membership and it was most certainly not an offer that I could turn down!
For just £36 a year I could become a member and have free access to all National Trust parks in the UK, carparks included. Normally I pay £6 alone for just one carpark session and £12 entry to Glendurgan Garden so becoming a member definitely saves me money in the long run. Plus, it supports a fantastic charity. SO, where have I been over the last few weeks since becoming a member?
Kynance Cove located on the Lizard Peninsula
Kynance Cove is probably one of the most photographed beaches in Cornwall, if not the UK. Located on the Lizard Peninsula, the contrast between the cove’s white sand beach and the dark red rock produces a breathtaking sight. At low tide you can explore caves and rock stacks - one of my favourite things to do at the beach. I’ve been to Kynance a handful of times but it manages to amaze me at every single visit. Godrevy located on the North Coast
Whether you fancy giving surfing a go, building sand castles on the beach or indulging in a cliff top picnic, Godrevy has something to offer everyone. Take a walk along the coast path towards the lighthouse and explore the hidden coves – don’t forget to keep an eye out for the seal colony that can be spotted throughout the year on Mutton Cove.
Godrevy has probably been my most visited beach this year. There are always so many different coves and rock pools to explore, plus the lighthouse point is an incredible spot for photo opportunities! (Side note - how nice is the jacket that I’m wearing from Lighthouse Clothing!? *Gifted)
Durgan on the Helford River, nr Falmouth
Strolling into Durgan village is like taking a step back in time. With views across the Helford Eustury, Durgan village has a strong boating tradition and is home to just 15 properties, which are now mainly owned by the National Trust. Durgan is situated at the foot of the subtropical Glendurgan gardens that wind up through the valley. There is a slipway at Durgan which can be used to launch dinghies and kayaks.
Grebe beach just around the corner is a safe cove which is perfect for families (read the post about my family memories on this beach here). The mainland protects the cove so it makes for the perfect place to splash around in the water without the fear of strong currents. The beach itself is small, so it’s easy to keep an eye on any adventurous children that may have the tendency to wonder off (100% me as a small person).
Glendurgan Gardens nr the Helford
Located in the valley just stones throw away from Durgan town, Glendurgan Garden is a true Cornish gem. A little less tropical than Trebah Garden, Glendurgan is beautiful all year round. Big leaves and exotic flowers thrive in the jungle-like lower valley and sun-loving specimens enjoy the upper banks. The children adore the maze which was planted over 180 years ago by the Fox family who owned the garden before they gave it to the National Trust.
I’ve only had my National Trust membership for a month but I am really looking forward to exploring more of Cornwall’s special places. The National Trust really looks after the very best of Cornwall and a membership is such great value for money - plus, it gives you a reason to get out and see more of our beautiful county!
