Cornwall Spa Day: The Scarlet Hotel
There was nothing I needed more than a complete day of relaxation by the sea. The spa at The Scarlet Hotel has got to be one of the best spa days that I’ve had in quite some time and I left feeling reconnected and refreshed.
Perched on the cliffs at Mawgan Porth, The Scarlet Hotel is known as one of Cornwall’s most luxurious boutique hotels. After working within the Cornwall tourism industry for two years, I knew that The Scarlet Hotel was a big deal. As an eco, adult friendly hotel, The Scarlet is really the only one of its kind in the county and focuses on reconnecting human connection and holistic wellbeing through bespoke moments.
As soon as we drove into the carpark, we were welcomed by a member of staff who accompanied us to the hotel. The first thing I noticed as we walked through the entrance were the huge floor to ceiling windows which offered outstanding views onto Mawgan Porth beach - not bad for a first impression! There is also no reception but somehow the staff just appear upon arrival.
Leah and I were kindly invited to experience the Eventide Spa Package which included full use of the steam room, outdoor barrel cedar sauna, indoor pool, natural reed filtered outdoor pool, deep relaxation space and meditation room. We also had an hour to spend in the cliff top hot tub, followed by a treatment and a super delicious healthy lunch in the hotel restaurant.
With the emphasis on holistic wellness, The Scarlet spa has a fantastic reputation so my expectations were high - its one of those places that I’ve always wanted to go to but have never had the chance. To begin with, our host gave us a tour of the pool, the different relaxation rooms and the outside area which includes a natural pool and a sauna perched on the cliff side. One thing for me that stood out was that The Scarlet spa has uplifting ‘chill out’ areas hidden away from the pool - guests are prompted to relax in near enough silence with minimal use of electronics to make it easier to escape everyday life and work on relaxation.
We began with a dip in the pool and caught up whilst admiring the views from the outside area. The holistic spa has been cleverly designed so you’re always close to sea views. The Scarlet focuses on the traditional Ayurvedic wisdom but combines the elements (fire, water, fire, wind, ether) with a Cornish twist.
I enjoyed a Shrirobhyanga massage which focuses on the neck and lower back. The treatment was delivered by the wonderful Lorena who talked me through the treatment and explained the procedure and benefits - Lorena is clearly passionate and expert when it comes to wellbeing as she managed to unpick my stress and ease the tension. After the treatment, I was welcomed into their hidden deep relaxation room; a dark area with cocoon like swinging pods - I spent ten minutes in this room with my thoughts alone and I managed to completely zone out for a few moments (something I didn’t realise I was capable of).
The highlight for me was the hot tub positioned on the cliff with direct views over the beach. My three favourite things - a hot tub, prossecco and the sea! I’d seen so many photos on Instagram of this particular view/hot tub and have always longed to be there myself. Our experience definitely lived up to expectations and we couldn’t have wished for better weather.
The spa team reserve a hot tub time for you so you can enjoy privacy and tranquility. The staff treated us like royalty and we were kindly bought prosecco and clean robes - honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever been looked after so well (sorry ex boyfriends but it’s true).
Lunch was the real health kick that I needed after a heavy weekend partying at The Masked Ball. Already feeling relaxed, we were shown up to the restaurant where we had the delight of tucking into an assortment of fresh salads to start. The menu is inspired by Ayurveda and has been created in harmony with the spa. Leah went for the chicken breast with red pepper and coconut rice whilst I chose the tikka fish and pak choi with carrot, fennel and mushroom stir fry.
For some strange reason I find it VERY difficult to let go and relax. My mind is constantly on overdrive and I’ve always had problems with trying to shut down - especially when it comes to work. My experience of The Scarlet Spa was superb and I genuinely felt so relaxed throughout our visit and the feeling continued through the rest of the week (hallelujah, it is possible)!
Our experience of the Scarlet spa was amazing and we both left feeling rejuvenated. For anyone looking for a spa day in Cornwall where you will be truly looked after then I can’t recommend The Scarlet enough. At a slightly higher price point, the spa would make a perfect present for a special occasion or for those who are seeking balance in their life. Thank you to The Scarlet for a truly wonderful and relaxing day.
