The Lobster Shed, The Pig at Harlyn Bay in Cornwall

The Pig at Harlyn Bay in Cornwall has been on my radar since it first opened. Due to several lockdowns, my desperation to visit The Lobster Shed was prolonged. After the last lockdown, I finally managed to reserve a table for my sister Niki and I, to experience casual outdoor dining at The Lobster Shed.

The Pig at Harlyn Bay (near Padstow) is one of Cornwall’s most historic houses dating back to the 1600s. The Pig is just a stone's throw away from Padstow and Constantine beaches, which meant that we could enjoy a sunny beach walk along Harlyn before heading over to The Lobster Shed for lunch. Harlyn Bay beach has an expanse of golden sand, lots of surfing activity, and several incredible houses perched proudly on the cliff edge.

A home away from home, The Pig truly feels like a place that encourages slow living by the coast. At the moment (May 2021,) The Pig only offers informal alfresco dining on their courtyard or The Lobster Shed. The outdoor space matches the foodie reputation of its neighbouring restaurants in Padstow but offers less of the hassle (if you know Padstow, then you will know exactly what I mean.)

Located on the grounds of The Pig Hotel, The Lobster Shed serves up wood-oven and local charcoal-fired grill, Padstow lobster, fresh crab, meats, BBQ’d vegetables, and daily picked salads. The dining space is covered by a canvas roof, alongside blankets and fires to keep you warm during temperamental Cornish rain showers.

I, of course, ordered half a Padstow Lobster, alongside triple-cooked chips. Niki opted for the chargrilled steak that was cooked to perfection and bold in flavour. Both dishes tasted incredible - it was a post-lockdown meal to remember! After, we tucked into scallops and then finished with ice cream to share.

Once we had finished our lunch, we warmed up with a coffee in the garden, both lusting over The Pig mansion. The building itself is spectacular, with Tudor-looking windows and slate walls. I could only imagine what it looks like inside. One day.
