The Cornish Larder: A Taste of Cornwall

A Taste of Cornwall is a BRAND new event that celebrates everything about Cornish produce. Jake Kendall, the founder of The Cornish Larder and his photographer partner Abi Hobbs have joined forces with a number of different Cornish producers to create a 3-course unique dining experience hosted at Zannah’s Time Too Cafe in Probus.

Jake has been cheffing for 10 years, so since he was 15. Despite only being in his mid-twenties, Jake has gained incredible experience within the foodie world, not just in the UK but in France and Australia too. After cheffing at The Nare Hotel in Cornwall for 8 years, Jake decided to take the leap and start his own business, The Cornish Larder. The Cornish Larder creates delicious preserves which all include a popular Cornish drink.

“The Cornish Larder started life as an idea whilst I was Head Chef working in a 2 rosette Kitchen. I have always been very passionate about cooking and love working with top quality ingredients. Having learnt and mastered recipes whilst working and travelling around the world i have now settled in my home county, Cornwall. I hope everyone loves eating my foods as much as i love cooking them.”

- Jake Kendall, founder of The Cornish Larder

The Taste of Cornwall dinner celebrates the best of Cornish produce within an intimate setting. Both Jake and Abi spoke to us about the products used in each dish, their qualities and where we could purchase them if we wanted to. I genuinely believe that Jake and Abi have found a wonderful way to champion other Cornish products as well as their own. Zannah’s Time Too Cafe is a perfect venue for the event - a very intimate, cosy cafe located in the heart of Probus, just outside of Truro.

Upon arrival we were given a selection of bread from Kelp Bakery, charcuterie from Duchy Charcuterie and oils from Hard Pressed Cornwall. The oils were exceptional and I definitely want to get my hands on the vegan chorizo oil (yes you read correctly, vegan chorizo!)

To start we had goats cheese from Polmarkyn Dairy, The Cornish Larder beetroot relish, coastal dukkah from The Dukkah Company, macerated blackberries, and Canara Farm lizard leaves. Delicious!

The main course was by far my favourite! Each dish was prepared on an open-top table so everyone who was dining was able to see how Jake put the ingredients together. For the main course, we indulged in aubergine cannelloni, ratatouille, The Cornish Larder tomato, and chili relish, feta stuffed olives from Oliver’s Olives, Wild Pesto, and herb oil from Hard Pressed Cornwall. I absolutely loved this dish so I hope to replicate it at home (probably with some difficulty - I’m not the greatest chef!)

Dessert was Jake’s own take on the Cornish Cream Tea. Clotted cream cheesecake from Trewithen Dairy was combined with Prima Bakery scone base, The Cornish Larder Strawberry jam, and Callestick strawberry and clotted cream ice cream.

At the end of the event, we were each give a goody bag full of Cornish goodies. I can’t wait to try the products in my dishes!

The next Taste of Cornwall event will take place on the 20th December at Zannah’s Time Too Cafe. The menu will change, as will the producers. As far as I’m aware, the menu will be inspired by CHRISTMAS! There are only 12 spaces for this event so make sure you purchase your ticket ASAP to avoid disappointment. Thank you Jake, Abi and Zennah for a wonderful evening!

*I was kindly invited to this event complimentary however all opinions are my own - I genuinely believe that Jack and Abi are on to something very special!
